China Suppliers Factory Titanium Clad Steel Plates for Corrosion Resistance and Structural Integrity
Two Metals. One Engineered Material Solution.
Metal composite technology combines the functions of different metals through metallurgical bonding, allowing each component to perform the role for which it is best suited.
What Is a Titanium Clad Plate?
A titanium clad plate is a composite plate in which titanium or titanium alloy is used as the corrosion-resistant cladding layer and another metal is used as the structural substrate. The cladding layer is typically thinner than the total composite thickness, while the base layer provides most of the structural strength and stiffness.
This design can reduce the amount of expensive titanium required while retaining a titanium working surface. The result is a material solution that combines corrosion resistance, structural performance and cost efficiency.
Titanium Cladding Layer
Provides the corrosion-resistant working surface. Titanium or titanium alloys can be selected according to the service environment and project requirements.
Base / Substrate Layer
Usually thicker and acts as the structural body, providing mechanical strength and stiffness while helping reduce overall material cost.
Why Use Titanium Clad Plates?
The cladding and substrate perform complementary functions, allowing the material system to meet corrosion-resistance, structural and cost requirements together.
Titanium Working Surface
Titanium provides the corrosion-resistant surface required in demanding chemical, chloride, seawater and process environments.
Strong Base Metal
Carbon steel, stainless steel and other substrates provide the structural strength and stiffness needed for equipment and fabricated components.
Less Precious Metal
Only the required thickness of high-value titanium is used as the cladding, while the substrate provides the bulk of the structural material.
Titanium Clad Plate Combinations
Titanium-clad steel is the core configuration for demanding industrial equipment. Other metal combinations can be reviewed according to project requirements.
| Product Type | Cladding | Substrate | Standard | Typical Applications |

Three Composite Bonding Routes
Common bonding routes include explosion bonding, rolling bonding and combined explosion + rolling. The suitable route is selected according to material combination, dimensions, thickness and project requirements.

Explosion Bonding
Uses controlled high-speed collision to create a metallurgical bond between titanium and the substrate. It is commonly considered for large-size plates and demanding metal combinations.

Rolling Bonding
Titanium and substrate plates are stacked and bonded through controlled rolling under heat and pressure. The route can be considered where production efficiency and surface quality are important.

Explosion + Rolling
A bonded slab is produced first and then rolled to refine dimensions, thickness control and surface condition. This combined route can be considered for larger or more demanding plate configurations.
Where Titanium Clad Plates Are Used
Titanium clad steel plates are considered for equipment where a corrosion-resistant working surface is needed without making the entire structural body from titanium.

Petrochemical & Chemical Equipment
Titanium-steel clad plates are identified as a traditional and important application in petrochemical and chemical equipment. Titanium provides stability in various acid, alkali and salt media, while the substrate supplies the structural body.
- Pressure vessels
- Chemical processing towers
- Petroleum refining and chemical plants
- Bleaching equipment in textile and paper industries

Seawater Desalination
Titanium's resistance to seawater, chloride solutions and fluid erosion makes titanium-steel clad plates a material option for desalination equipment where corrosion resistance is a key requirement.

Power, Metallurgy & Electrochemical Equipment
Titanium-copper composite plates are listed for power and metallurgy applications and are described as combining electrical conductivity with corrosion resistance. They can also be used for electrodes and chemical processing equipment.
Start With the Configuration, Not Just the Grade
For clad-plate projects, the material combination, dimensions and layer thicknesses determine the manufacturing and quotation approach.
Example Configuration
Why This Matters for Quotation
A large steel substrate with a relatively thin titanium working layer can reduce titanium consumption compared with a solid-titanium design. Final feasibility, bonding route, tolerances and inspection requirements should be reviewed against the complete project specification.
Use Titanium Where It Matters
Composite design is not simply about joining two metals. It is about assigning each material a specific engineering function.
| Requirement | Titanium Cladding | Base / Substrate | Composite Benefit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corrosion resistance | Primary function | Secondary | Corrosion-resistant working surface |
| Mechanical strength / stiffness | Not the main design role | Primary function | Structural support from substrate |
| Material cost | Used selectively | Bulk material | Reduced use of high-value titanium |
| Electrical performance | Selected according to system | Copper or copper alloy can contribute conductivity | Functional combination for specific equipment |
| Overall performance | Different properties are combined through metallurgical bonding | Can achieve a performance combination not provided by a single metal | |
Quality & Inspection
Inspection is planned around the material specification and project requirements, with attention to substrate quality, bonding integrity, surface condition and final dimensions.
Base Plate Verification
Base plate acceptance includes quality certification and verification of required material condition. For specified pressure-equipment substrates, chemical analysis, tensile testing and impact testing can be included according to the applicable specification.
Bonding & Defect Inspection
Inspection can include UT, RT, PT and other project-required non-destructive examinations. Surface condition is checked before NDT to ensure the inspection surface is clean and suitable for evaluation.
Explosion Bonding Parameters
For explosion bonding, material selection, explosive type, installation method, explosive charge quality and stand-off distance are considered together as key process parameters.
| Inspection / Control | What It Covers |
|---|---|
| Material verification | Mill certificates and required material condition for titanium cladding and substrate. |
| Bonding inspection | Non-destructive examination such as UT, with acceptance criteria agreed to the applicable standard and project specification. |
| Additional NDT | RT, PT or other examinations can be arranged when required by the inspection plan. |
| Final inspection | Dimensions, surface condition and other agreed requirements are checked before shipment. |
